Polyurethane Foam Block
Available in 3’x4’x5” and 3’x4’x2” blocks, this popular plug making foam can be carved, glued, sawed, and sanded into your desired shape. PU foam will withstand styrene and resin attack, unlike polystyrene (Styrofoam). Add a few layers of Polypatch Body Filler (see POLYPATCH page) and shine to a hi gloss prior to molding.

Plaster of Paris
Used for finished products such as chalk, figurines and wall cornices, and as molds for candles. Plaster is also used as “backing” support for silicone rubber molds. Safe and non-toxic for children to use (e.g. hand print projects). Available in Filler (regular) and Fig. 1 (high strength)

Room Temperature Vulcanizing Rubber (RTV)
Two-part rubber system used for mold-making. RTV can faithfully reproduce the finest detail and texture. Polyester resin, polyurethane, candle wax, low melt alloys, epoxy resin are all used to reproduce items. Use RTV 585 for originals with little undercuts and RTV 524 for more complicated molding. Comes with catalyst.

Silicone Oil
Use Silicone Oil (up to 10% by RTV weight) to reduce/ thin down the RTV. Thicken RTV with 1-3% stop sag by RTV weight. Used also for softening old, hardened rubber.

Petroleum Jelly
Acts as a release agent for the RTV and original piece. Brush on original product and polish before pouring RTV. Yes, may also be used on chapped lips, burns and wounds. |
